STROLLING THROUGH SAVANNAH || EATING HER FOOD

Friday, November 14, 2014

 Food. I have to start with food.

We ate this city up! Literally. Savannah offers so many options for local dining experiences. We had a variety of food at restaurants both new and old, all of which were delicious. ALL OF THEM! Without hesitation, I would recommend eating at all of the restaurants and bakeries listed below should you ever travel to Savannah. You will not be disappointed.

We had breakfast every morning in the basement of our bed and breakfast, the East Bay Inn. They had it all: homemade biscuits with gravy, eggs, grits, ham, sausage... everything. And it was delicious. Every bit of it. So with breakfast taken care of, it was up to us to make selections for lunch, snacks, and dinner. Here's the collection of the places we enjoyed.

{Sunday, November 9}
DINNER || Rocks on the River

We ordered:
Shrimp and Grits
Bohemian Burger

Brad's burger came with a side of fries that we "upgraded" to Truffle Fries. Those fries were heaven. And the burger came with a vidalia onion jam that was so good. We even took some back with us. The portions were massive, so go with an empty tummy.

They also presented us with chocolate truffles and a Happy 10th Anniversary card just because they're awesome.

SNACK || Leopold's Ice Cream || Celebrating 95 Years
We ordered:
Pistachio Ice Cream
Rum Bisque Ice Cream

Leopold's was founded in 1919. They've been around a while and there's a reason for it.

{Monday, November 10}
LUNCH || The Lady and Sons || Celebrating 25 Years
 Of course I had to visit Paula Deen's restaurant!

Butter Christmas Ornaments. I love her.

And look who was "playing famous." (His words not mine.) We got to meet Jamie Deen! He was just as approachable and friendly as you would expect. We spent a little time (and money) in the gift shop before stepping over into the restaurant.

We ordered:
Fried Green Tomatoes
Southern Cheese Steak
Crab Cake Burger

The Fried Green Tomatoes were phenomenal and Brad's favorite food during our visit. It could've been the sweet onion relish and/or the roasted red pepper sauce that came with it. I don't really know. It was all perfect.

DINNER || Bernie's Oyster House
We ordered:
Kid's Fried Shrimp with Tater Tots
Oysters on the Half Shell
Boiled Shrimp

I was still full from lunch when we went to dinner at Bernie's. Brad had plenty of room to eat all of his meal and my leftovers. =)

{Tuesday, November 11}
LUNCH || Crystal Beer Parlor || Established in 1933

We ordered:
Creamy Blue Crab Dip
Greek Pita Pizza
Brown Ale Burger
Gawgia Peach Cobbler

My favorite meal the entire trip was here, at the Crystal Beer Parlor. Every bite of everything we ordered was perfect.

SNACK || Marché de Macarons

We ordered:
Pistachio
Raspberry
Tybee Turtle
Vanilla Bean
Salted Caramel
Bananas Foster
German Chocolate
Chocolate Covered Strawberry

German Chocolate was my favorite, although the associate said Salted Caramel was the most popular.

DINNER || The Pirate's House
Low Country Garlic Shrimp
Pan Seared Sea Scallops
Award Winning Pecan Fried Chicken

They brought out half a chicken for me to eat. HALF A CHICKEN! A fried wing, thigh, breast, and drum stick. I tried, but I just couldn't get it all in.

{Wednesday, November 12}
LUNCH || Clary's Cafe || Est. 1903
We ordered:
Freshly Made Corned Beef Hash
Flame Broiled Marinated Chicken Breast Sandwich
Famous Jumbo Homemade Eclair

That eclair was ginormous. Also, have you read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. This is restaurant where the crazy man that wore flies attached to his clothes would eat breakfast. CRAZY.

SNACK || Back in the Day Bakery

We ordered:
Drunk Blondie
Lavender Cookie
Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookie

Paula Deen cried the first time she tasted one of their cupcakes. She cried. I had to go. I loved this little shop, but we were getting short on time and had to get our treats to-go. Plus, they were preparing to close and were already cleaning up, so our selection was limited. Brad and I halved the Blondie later that night. It was yummy to my tummy!

DINNER || The Olde Pink House || Built in 1789

We ordered:
Sautéed Local Shrimp with Country Ham Gravy and Cheddar Cheese Grits Cake
“BLT" Fried Green Tomatoes and Sweet Bacon Salad with Black Pepper Thyme Buttermilk Dressing
Crispy Scored Flounder with Apricot Shallot Sauce
Side of Hoppin' Johns
Side of Collards

We had a great waiter, Alex, that came out to tell us the dinner specials and his recommendations. We ordered everything he recommended. He even said that the BLT Salad was featured on Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate show. Alex also joked that the lady that makes the collards "came with the house" and that's all that she does there. Cook the collards. After eating her collards, Brad told Alex that she could keep her job. The collards at The Olde Pink House was my second favorite food stop from our trip.
We ended our last night, which was also our anniversary night back at our room with a glass of bubbly in the champagne flutes that we toasted with ten years ago. Happy Tenth Anniversary to us!
