A PORTLAND ICE CREAM CRAWL

A PORTLAND ICE CREAM CRAWL
It’s officially Spring Break up here in the PNW! Too bad the airlines know all about it. It’s super expensive to catch a flight out of Portland these days, or at least it’s too expensive for our family’s budget. We do have plans to take a family trip to Denver soon but we saved nearly $700 on airline flights when we decided to be flexible with our travel days.

So, on this Official Week of Spring Break, we are enjoying a Portland Staycation. I was thinking over the weekend that it would be a lot of fun to take the kids into the city + do a few food tours: ice cream, doughnut, bakery, hot dog… I wanted to stop in at some popular spots around the city + feast on what only Portland can offer us.

For absolutely no reason at all, I thought we’d start with an ice cream tour. After a quick online search, I found out that “tour” was the wrong word + “crawl” was far more popular for such a thing. (Here I was, thinking I had a new idea. Nope.) All that was left to do was to narrow down the number of ice cream shops I intended to visit, keeping in mind that I didn’t want to make my 7yo + 4yo sick in the process. The location of each of the ice cream shops came into play as well. I didn’t want to have to do too much driving back + forth over the Willamette River.

As it turns out, Southeast Portland was created with Ice Cream Crawls in mind. I found five local ice cream shops within 7.5 miles from each other. Perfect. To make it more fun, I thought we could rate each of the Ice Cream Shops to see if we could agree upon a family favorite, so I designed an Ice Cream Crawl Scorecard. I also made a cute little Ice Cream Crawl Map for us to follow. The kids really loved the inclusion of the map! Turns out, one of the Ice Cream Shops that I had hoped to visit wasn’t open for business on Mondays. I thought about removing it from the map but decided against it, just in case one of you guys might want to include it on your Portland Ice Cream Crawl. =)

Equipped with our maps, scorecards, pens + hungry bellies, we drove into SE Portland. Here are the Ice Cream Shops we visited:

Let’s move on to the photo fun, shall we?!

The results are in. Drumroll, please…Wouldn’t you know it. Each of the three of us chose a different winner.

7yo – Cloud City
33yo – Salt + Straw
4yo – Fifty Licks

This was such a fun afternoon spent in Portland with my Little Ones. I guarantee you’d have a blast doing it in your town too.

P. S. Don’t forget, you can download + print the scorecards + map here!
P. P. S. To save on cost, we ordered kids cones at each location, which I strongly encourage you to do – unless you want a belly ache + an empty wallet.

EXPLORING CALIFORNIA || REDWOOD FOREST

EXPLORING CALIFORNIA || REDWOOD FOREST
I took an unintentional blog break recently. Sorry guys. It's just that my family was coming into town for a weekend + I was busy getting my home in order. Then they arrived + I was doing my best to take them to different places in + around Portland. We had a great time enjoying eats around the city. We dined at St. Honoré Boulangerie with ice cream to follow next door at Salt + Straw. (My daughter + I enjoyed a meal followed by dessert at these two locations the week before, so I knew they would be winners.) The next day was St. Patrick's Day, which also happens to be my Little Sister's birthday. We started off the day at Wings + Waves Waterpark (I might have snuck in a few delicious cupcakes from New Seasons) then eventually we made our way to the movie theater to see Beauty + The Beast on opening night. We finished off the evening with a late night meal at Industry in Tualatin. Nothing but great things to say about all of the fun places we visited + dined.
Saturday morning rolled around + we hit the road for a family roadtrip into California to see the Redwoods. Mostly, we traveled down The 101 + it pretty much took us eight hours to get to Crescent City, California but there were some awesome views of the Pacific Ocean along the way, despite the rain + clouds. Unfortunately, the restaurants we ate at along the way were not so pleasant. (I'm looking at you Fisherman's Grotto + The Good Harvest Cafe.) Seriously, Crescent City redeemed itself when we ate at Denny's on Sunday morning. I kid you not. Maybe sometimes it's best to just stick with what you know will be good.
A short 5-mile drive later + we arrived at the Nickerson Ranch Trailhead in the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. We took our time walking along the short route, taking in the sights + sounds (Mostly the sounds were made by our crew... i.e. Daddy whacking a stick on a cross bridge + children being children.) Just for a little height reference, my father is 6'2". The fallen redwood they are standing in front of has a trunk base that is over twice my father's height. Some are reported to have bases over 20-feet in diameter. WOW!
Visiting the Redwood Forest has been on my father's bucket list for quite some time now. It made my heart happy to be able to share this experience with him + the rest of my family. I would certainly encourage you to add a trip to the Redwoods to your bucket list as well. They are over 2,000 years old! And they're ginormous, some over 350 feet tall.
We moved along + started making our way back toward home. This was my last chance to squeeze a little more Oregon in on the last night of their trip. And what's more Oregon than Voodoo Doughnuts? Truth is, in the combined six years of our time spent living in the Portland Metro Area, I had never eaten at Voodoo Doughnuts. I had only attempted to once before + the line was just too long for me to wait with my then two-year-old son. Turns out, there was a shop in Downtown Eugene, not too far off of I-5. We stopped in + helped ourselves. (Maybe it's just me, but I like Blue Star Donuts better. #SorryNotSorry

ST. PATRICK'S DAY GIFTS FOR GUYS

ST. PATRICK'S DAY GIFTS FOR GUYS
I spent a little bit of time in town last week, searching for some St. Patrick’s Day goodies to bring home for My Guy. Is he of Irish descent? Not likely, but he does enjoy two of Ireland’s greatest exports, Guinness Stout + Jameson Whiskey, as do I. Plus, there aren’t too many holidays I let pass without some sort of celebration. Usually, I try to make the holidays special for our children, and trust me, they will get their fair share of SPD goodies – but SPD is kind of a boozy holiday, right? I wanted to find some gifts for us adults to enjoy. Here is little gift basket I put together.
By the way, Brendan Behan was a famous Irish author. You can read more about him here. It seems he was quite the character.

So neat that you can go to their website + see the field that your potato chips were grown. And might I add how amazed I was that the bag wasn’t full of crumbs, but rather actual chips.
I only had to make two stops to find all of these St. Patrick’s Day treats; first, Lolli + Pops and then Cost Plus World Market. After I got home, I searched Amazon + found that they sold many of the items as well, so there’s no need to fret if you don’t have either of the other stores mentioned in your area. Below, I have included links to each of the items + since this is in no way a sponsored post + doesn’t include any affiliate links, I’ll give you our honest opinion of the goodies.

  • Guinness Extra Stout – Yum.
  • Grace’s Irish Shortbread – Yum.
  • Lakeshore’s Strong Irish Mustard – Delicious. (Brad is a mustard connoisseur. He returns from international business trips with mustard. I kid you not.)
  • Butler’s Irish Whiskey Truffles – Yum.
  • Guinness Luxury Mini Pint Chocolates – Yum.
  • World Market’s Irish Cream Coffee – Brad votes eh. I vote yum.
  • Keogh’s Irish Farmhouse Cheese + Onion Chips – Yum.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, Folks!
